Do we make you stronger or weaker?

In the week of April 19th, there was a Werkplekdag of our Power BI Academy. On these days we help the transporters in the making of their own reports. In conversation with a few participants, I questioned our "help" to start an open conversation. Do we really make you stronger, or - although meant well - weaker?

the Observation of the vicious circle

Most of the Power BI specialists, do the Power BI "on the side". They've been asked once to build a report or have started doing so on won initiative. Like all dataprojects, this quickly gained interest. After all, how nice is it to finally have the right insights! Even better, finally someone who can do that and who understands the task at hand.

So naturally, the Power BI Specialist gets more and more requests. The reports must be maintained ánd updated. The user amount increases and thus the amount of requests, maintenance and so on... The data is in various sources and ideally this is combined. Unfortunately, the knowledge for this is not available and so the Power BI specialist gets assigned the task to research this o top of all his/her other work. The performance of the source should also be watched and the question about correctness of the data quality comes around once every so often.

So, everything is in-house and well arranged. Everybody has their insight and asking external help is a waste. This has been tried before and has never lead to anything, except for a loss of money. Compared to that, this is perfect!

false independence

In an open conversation with a few participants of the Power BI Academy, I have put my observation to the test. "Is this perfect? How are you doing?" I asked, because what I seem to see is that the company makes itself dependent on 1 person. "What happens to all those insights if you are on holiday? Or if you decide to switch to another job?"

The unanimous answer was: Nothing. Even more so, the feeling that that is the case, sometimes even adds extra pressure...
My dearest Transporters, this can't be true. We have to change this, together.

Being independent has its price

Bricklog specializes in the collecting, combining, modeling, calculating, visualization and distribution of data. Therefore, we use 4 specialities. Currently, your Power BI specialist is asked to do the same. Next to his/her own work.

Make the business case

How many hours per week does your specialist work on this directly? And indirectly? Plus, take in consideration, all the conversations between the specialist and the other employees about the reports.

10 hours per week (?) * hourly rate * 4,3 week/mth / 12 months.

And if I understand correctly, this investment is lost in case the specialist decides to leave your company? Continue calculating:

4.3 week per month no insight * x amount of month * even more conversations, even more noice, build everything from the ground up again….

Believe me, I. am an advocate of doing it yourself. In the sense of the long-term vision also being correct. Both for the hardworking report builder, as for the company.

Independence and continuity

To fully support your Power BI specialist, we make them stronger by training them in timesaving techniques. They have access to a library of training movies as a knowledge- and education source. In addition, they get personal guidance in the making of their - your - reports.

That has to stay that way.

The number of participants in our Power BI Academy that deals with the unhealthy dependence of one person is high. And I'm not even talking about the specialists that we do not know.

To be fair, some specialists really enjoy it that they also think it's fine.

Nevertheless, if we continue like this you will both end up in a stranglehold. The self-sufficiency no longer matches dependence, and certainly no longer with continuity.

We're talking about an organization here, right? Indirectly, we make your specialist and your enterprise weaker. And that while the intent of the Power BI Academy was to make you both stronger.

This can change.

In less time, with less costs, more insights?

First of all, it is important that this is addressable within the company. That the risks for both people and company are known and addressed. And that the current costs are also well identified.

Then comes the consideration. What is it worth to you to solve it differently?

Imagine: You have basic financial and operational insights available on a daily basis. Profit, CO2, KPI's, Effectivity and Data quality reports. Refreshed daily. In your own data portal in your own branding. And naturally you can share your CO2 report everyday with your customers via your own portal.

And... your Power BI specialist still makes the reports and responds to actual topics that need to be made insightful.

What I describe above is Bricklog Basic. Our solution that you connect to your TMS. With this, you get your basic insights in order, whilst your Power BI specialist responds to actuality. This way, you also secure your key insights if your Power BI specialist is no longer, or never has been, at your company.

What we solve with this is the lack of continuity and false independence. But also the hidden cost that now seems to be the saving of suppliers costs.

At the same time you stimulate your organization to work data-driven (1 platform, 1 truth, 1 team!) and your Power BI specialist gets the time to focus on what is really needed.

If you have a TMS, this could be your new reality within a month. Do you want to know how will have more insights for less time, less costs, and how you can deploy your Power BI specialist even better?

About the Power BI Academy

The Power BI Academy was established roughly 5 years ago to support the entrepreneurs in the Transport & Logistics in the making of their own reports. Our vision is that you also have to know how to this as an entrepreneur. Why? Because of flexibility. The importance of building in-house knowledge.  And really understand what is involved in making a whole out of separate parts.

in our training we solve such things as the following:

  • Solitude  – The Power BI specialist is usually alone in the company.
  • Time The specialist usually does this next to his/her real job.
  • Knowledge – For more knowledge, the specialist depends on search engines.

Our answer to this is:

  • Power BI Community – Every month there is an Knowledge- and Werkplekdag where, together with other members of the sector, you get extra help in the development of reports.
  • Time-saving techniques – Trainings are aimed at time-saving techniques.
  • Library of training movies – more than 100 videos from Beginner up to Advanced that can be consulted 24/7 if you're stuck or if you're eager to learn more.
